STS took shape as a field in the 1970s, and the history of technoscience was one of the main forces behind its growth. As both fields have diversified, their relationship has been questioned again and again. This workshop is both an experiment and an invitation: to think together about how, in twenty-first-century East Asia, the history of technoscience and STS can still inspire each other, and how exchange across fields can deepen what each cares about and asks.

This year marks fifty years of the Society for Social Studies of Science (4S), and Taiwan will host the 4S international conference in 2027. In Taiwan, the Institute of Sociology at Academia Sinica set up its Medicine, Technology and Society research group in 2025, and the Institute of Modern History set up its Technoscience, Medicine and Environment research group this year. Together these point to new chances for working and talking across disciplines, and the workshop warmly welcomes everyone interested in technology, medicine and the environment.

The programme is on the Institute of Modern History’s event page. Times and rooms may change, so please check there before you go.

Society for Social Studies of Science(簡稱4S)成立五十週年。
